Whale's Tale

On a recent trip to Costa Rica I did some quick watercolor sketches. This is Punta Uvita at the south end of Playa Hermosa and is called the Whale's Tale because of its shape. My vantage point was high and miles away. A vast landscape is probably not the best choice for a tiny watercolor. Barely discernible in the distance is the Osa Peninsula.

This watercolor was done in 1991 from a trip to Guatemala. The market was within the ruins of a cathedral destroyed by an earthquake a long time ago.

This painting was accepted into the California State Fair fine arts competition and was given an Award of Merit. It also received a Publisher's Award from Inside Publications and this month is featured as the cover art on the Land Park edition of Inside magazine. Another old painting, this one from 1990. Part of the state water project, O'Neill is popular with windboarders. This view was from a point with shallow water, hence the mud flats in the painting.
