Ruse 31

Ruse 31 acrylic on canvas 24" x 36"

This is not a normal style that I would do, but my Ruse paintings are paintings that are painted over existing paintings that people donated to me to re-use the canvas or panel all of which were poorly done, hence why they were given to me to paint over. From the start of the series I let the existing paintings provide a start as to the direction the paintings went. So, many of the Ruse paintings look quite different but all are non-objective. This particular painting began as a cheap furniture store abstract vaguely like a poor Jackson Pollock. The other aspect of the Ruse paintings is that they are all companion paintings to original paintings that I'm doing. At the end of a painting session on my original painting I use the left-over paint on the palette or in cups to work on a Ruse painting. So the two paintings share a color palette. This painting was a companion to an original non-objective. At the end of the day's work I simply poured the left-over paint onto the pseudo Pollock, but tried to cover up the thinner Pollock style drips. I was interested in seeing the pools of paint dry to reveal other paints below.

Lost Painting

Untitled acrylic on canvas approximately 56 inches x 72 inches

I did this painting in 1971 at the University of South Dakota. At the time I was doing abstract art based on geologic formations. This particular work appeared in my senior show and the school wanted to keep it for its permanent collection. Instead, I gave it to my girlfriend, later my wife. After we were married and living in a tiny place I had to store this painting in a shed and it ended up being badly mildewed and I burned it.

Iron Nation

Iron Nation acrylic on canvas 29" x 36"
This piece is from 1972. I painted it as a gift but it was rejected and over time has become one of my favorites, partly because the scene is an area along the Missouri where I spent some time.
