San Lorenzo River

San Lorenzo River runs through Henry Cowell Redwood State Park near Felton, CA. Kathy, Kathy's cousin Chris and I hiked back to this spot on a sketch outing. This was a nice little beach area and an extremely friendly mallard hen was hanging out here. Altogether a fun, warm day.

Twin Peaks

The Twin Peaks are the two dark peaks to the right center of the picture. I'd like to get closer but it's on private property.

Lover's Leap

This is a prominent basaltic hill in the Diablo Range in central California.

San Joaquin River

If it doesn't look like water, that's because there is none. Instead this is a river of sand, the water being completely diverted to irrigation and other uses. Supposedly water has begun to be released to restore flows but it is still dry here. It's a complex ecological and political problem.

Box Compass

Today we have another object loitering around the studio. The compass and the telescope were purchased some years ago when I was reading some of the Patrick O'Brian books. I also used to have a brass sextant but that disappeared in a burglary.

Lots of on-line artists are painting fruits and vegetables, and I'm sure I'll paint my share of them, but I've decided to paint some of the other objects that I have at the studio. This is a small brass telescope that is not too much larger than the painting.
